Microflora & Age
The composition of intestinal microflora changes with age. Although the intestine is free of microbes at birth, aerobic bacteria like E.coli are introduced quickly from the outside. Intestinal microflora is dominated by bifidobacteria within 7 days after birth; and a stable bifidobacteria-dominated flora is established while infants are breastfed. During weaning, bifidobacteria gradually decrease until Bacteroides, Eubacterium, and others predominate in the intestine. During childhood, the intestinal flora becomes similar to that of adults including beneficial, harmful, and neutral bacteria. This state continues into adolescence and adulthood. In late adulthood, bifidobacteria decrease and harmful bacteria increase.
